Coach Shamekka Higgins Bio

Shamekka Higgins enters her second season on the Corsair Women’s Basketball staff.  Coach Higgins was previously the Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at Diego Rivera Learning Center from 2015-2017, where she set several school records including league champions in her first season, most wins and reaching playoffs 2 consecutive years.  She was Head Coach at the Elizabeth Learning Center from 2010-2013, where she set more school records, including league champions, reaching the L.A. City finals and State playoffs in her 2nd season.  Several players that Shamekka coached in high school have went on to have successful college playing careers.  Coach Higgins started her coaching career at her alma mater, L.A. Harbor College in 1999 (for 2 seasons).  In her 2 years playing, she earned several awards, including, Freshman of the Year, 1st Team All-Conference, L.A. Daily Breeze Junior College MVP and lettered for basketball at several Division I schools. 

Coach Higgins graduated with a B.A. in Child Development in 2005 from Union Institute & University and obtained her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership in 2013 from Concordia University.  She is currently a teacher in LAUSD and has been involved in education for over 15 years.  Coach Higgins has assisted in several camps throughout the Los Angeles area, including Bryon Scott from the Los Angeles Lakers and the California Heat.  She has assisted with various player development exercises and drills.  Coach Higgins enjoys preparing student-athletes for personal, academic and athletic development success. 

Coach Higgins is married to Tywan Towers; together they have two wonderful boys, Thomas (10) and Tyler (8) Towers.  Both, Thomas and Tyler participate in AAU basketball and AAU baseball.   Coach Higgins comes from a line of coaches, educators and professional basketball players.   Coach Higgins' parents are David and Valerie Higgins and she has six brothers.
