Freshman center Samera Henry led City with 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting and 12 rebounds in the Knights' 78-69 comeback win over Santa Monica (0-2) on Saturday night.
Freshman center Samera Henry led City with 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting and 12 rebounds in the Knights' 78-69 comeback win over Santa Monica (0-2) on Saturday night.
The Knights (1-4), who had lost their first four games of this young season, got off to a bad start against Santa Monica, falling behind 16-3 five minutes into the game.
The Corsairs' full-court press from the get-go bothered the Knights into eight first quarter turnovers, but after a couple of time outs, the Knights settled in and began to chip away at Santa Monica's lead.
City cut the Corsairs' lead to eight after the first quarter and then outscored Santa Monica 22-17 in the second quarter to get within three points at 39-36 by halftime.
The third quarter was not a good one for the Knights as they once again fell behind by 13, but a jumper by freshman center Joy Coleman near the end of the quarter jump started a Knights' rally.
They stormed back with a 20-2 run to take a 67-62 lead with 3:54 left in the game. The Knights hit four 3-pointers during that stretch, including two from Evangeline Morga and two from Mikaelah Wieland, who totaled 17 points and eight assists on the night.
The Knights made all four of their free throw attempts in the final minutes and consecutive second-chance layups by Henry kept Santa Monica at arm's distance.
Morga hit a 3-pointer, her fourth of the game, with 21 seconds left to put the game away.
City's next game will be at home on Friday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m. against Taft College in the opening round of the Knights' Colbert Classic tournament.
