Pirates bounce back with strong win over Corsairs

COSTA MESA -- After seeing its win streak stopped at 10 to start the season, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team looks to start another one after topping Santa Monica City College, 6-3, on Friday at the OCC Tennis Complex.

The Pirates (11-1) earned a hard-fought 2-1 lead after doubles play, thanks to wins from the teams of Rhea Gagnepain/Leanne Pascua (8-6) and Kayla Cheng/Merrit Dubourdieu (8-2).

In singles play, the Pirates managed to double-up the Corsairs, 4-2, with wins coming from Tori Varela (6-2, 6-2), Gagnepain (5-3, retired), Dubordieu (6-3, 6-2) and Cheng (6-3, 6-2).

The Pirates will return to Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday at home against Fullerton College, beginning at 2 p.m.
