SBVC Football and KVCR-TV 1st to Broadcast Live Community College Football Games in High Definition in Southern California

 

San Bernardino, CA August 28, 2012 - This season will mark a first for San Bernardino Valley College as the Inland Empire's PBS affiliate, KVCR-TV, will broadcast all home SBVC Football games live and in high definition starting with this Saturday's contest against Antelope Valley at 6 p.m.

 

"We're excited to provide SBVC football game coverage. This is a new 'field' for us and we hope everything goes off without any technical problems. It's great to provide coverage of our local community college student athletes," said Interim KVCR General Manager Kenn Couch. "The TV production aspect is a win-win as it also provides our student interns in the Radio, TV and Film Department the chance to work live sports. Some students will be operating cameras and carrying cable. It's a great opportunity for learning."

 

KVCR's broadcast area stretches from east of Palm Springs to just west of Santa Monica and from Temecula to the High Desert. KVCR-TV is also carried on DirectTV and Dish satellite networks.

 

"It validates what student athletes are doing on the field and in the classroom, the hard work they are putting in and allows the community to share in the successes of the team. It's great for the parents, friends and fans, with all of our players from local communities," said SBVC Football Head Coach Kevin Emerson. "KVCR's coverage allows football fans in the area to follow these same student athletes to community college football and beyond."

 

This opportunity for SBVC Football could be a significant benefit to the station as well as to the community at large, bringing in potential revenue and providing the only live Community College sports in Southern California. Interest is very high with almost all of the student athletes on the SBVC Football team living within the broadcast area, in addition to those who will be traveling to SBVC.

 

KVCR-TV broadcasts will include all of the following games, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. for each contest. Those visiting teams are: the Lancaster Antelope Valley Marauders on September 1st, the Santa Monica Corsairs on September 15th, the Rancho Cucamonga Chaffey Panthers on October 13th, the Monterey Park East L.A. Huskies on October 20th for Homecoming and Sophomore Night, and the Compton Tartars wrapping up the regular season on November 10th.

 

"I think many administrators, faculty, staff, and students would agree that SBVC is the best secret in the area, and there are many great things that go on here. Our athletics program is one of them, and if KVCR can expose the community to SBVC through the prism athletics it will be a great use of their resources to do so. To promote the college to the community in a positive manner will yield a great deal of good will," commented Director of Athletics, David Rubio.

It is important for KVCR to not only support local programming but also produce local programming about and within our community. This fall, KVCR is taking the initiative to train and give hands on experience to college student interns. An opportunity to expand this coverage beyond just football has been discussed, only if viewership numbers and fundraising numbers are up, will that become a reality. We encourage you to watch out for Saturday night football on KVCR, and when there is a chance to financially support public television, take it this fall.
