Santa Monica College (5-1) quarterback Alfonso Medina has been waiting for his chance to rack up some big numbers and he was given that chance against LA Southwest Saturday afternoon where he passed for close to 300 yards in the first half of play during the Corsairs 68-0 victory over the Cougars.
Medina went 17-31 for 271 yards with three touchdowns against the Cougars and is now ranked first in the Pacific Conference with nine arial touchdowns and 17 total passing touchdowns piling up 1309 yards in six games for the 2012 season.
"I felt the offense did extremely well today and we did all the things we set out to do," said Medina. "I think it was a good week of practice and as the season has been going on we have been getting better and better and things have been starting to gel."
Throughout the first half, Medina distributed the ball around to his receivers Reggie Mitchell, Ralph Gordon II, and tight end Dominique Bierria to keep the Cougars on their heels while running backs Myles Johnson and Aaron Jones pushed the ball forward on the ground.
Medina thought that Gordon and Mitchell have contributed strongly to his receiving squad.
"Ralph is doing a great job and had a couple of great catches today but he has really done well this year," said Medina. "Reggie played two years ago and makes the catches that we need when we throw the ball to him."
Medina gave credit to his offensive line for giving him the time to throw the ball.
"I feel like all of my line stepped up especially Dominique Bierria, Bryan Polio at center, and Alphonso Dixon on the right guard," said Medina. "We are gelling quite well and they are getting really comfortable with each other and today showed the things we can do."
Medina also mentioned the outstanding play of left tackle Dominique Vaugn, left guard Craig Lowe, and right tackle Marquise Shakir.
Medina and the Corsairs started off the onslaught against the Cougars during the first quarter on a ten yard pass to wide receiver Gordon who made a diving catch in the endzone to put Santa Monica College up 7-0.
Johnson rushed for a seven yard rushing touchdown later in the first quarter to make the game 14-0 and added another five yard rushing touchdown before the first quarter expired to put the game at 21-0.
Defensive back Qujuan Floyd intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 61 yards on the first play in the second quarter and a few plays later Medina found Mitchell open on a slant route for a nine yard touchdown to make the game 28-0 with 14:33 left on the clock early in the second quarter.
With 4:24 left on the clock in the second quarter, Medina tossed a sweet five yard floater to Mitchell who leaped a few feet in the air before coming down with the ball in the endzone for his second touchdown against the Cougars.
Johnson added a third rushing touchdown a minute and a half later to put the score at 41-0 with 3:08 left to go in the second quarter and that ended the Corsairs point bludgeoning for the first half.
The Corsairs gave their second and third stringers time to play in the second half and they continued the beat down racking more points until the final score was set at 68-0.
