SMC defeats LA Harbor College in Overtime

Saturday October 13, 2018

Wilmington, CA

The Santa Monica College  Corsair football team came back from a 14-0 deficit to win in overtime 23-17.  Sophomore Wide Receiver Trevor Nofoa scored a late 4th quarter touchdown and the game winning touchdown in overtime.

Los Angeles Harbor College jumped out to an early lead on two first quarter touchdowns.   The SMC defense rallied in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, only giving up 47 yards with three 3-and-out drives.  On special teams, the Corsairs tackled the punter twice before the ball was kicked, recovered a fumbled punt return and converted a fake punt to change the field position in favor of SMC.

In the 4th quarter with SMC trailing 17-10, Jordan Lawrence (So, MLB) came up with an Interception in the red zone.  Paul Davis (So, QB), who entered the game in the 2nd half, led an 85 yard drive that resulted in a 15-yard TD catch by Nofoa.  The drive was powered by a 31-yard catch and run by Tucker LaRue (Fr, WR) and a 23-yard 3rd down completion to Dajone Averett (Fr, WR), who had an earlier 44-yard TD from Jack Faringer (Fr, QB).

The Corsairs won the coin toss to start overtime and elected to begin on defense.  After a quick 3-and-out, Victor Rivera (Fr, DL) penetrated up the middle of the offensive line on the 4th down field goal attempt and forced a miss, setting the stage for the offense.

On the first play of overtime Davis connected on a screen pass to Nofoa for the game winning touchdown.  This was the first road win in over a year for the Corsairs and their first league victory since the 2015 season.

Next Saturday, October 20th, the Corsairs host Allan Hancock College for the Annual Santa Monica College Homecoming game.  Kick-off is at 4:00pm.
