SMC Wins Against Pasadena City

This time the Corsairs played at a high level against an opponent they figured to beat. This time the Corsairs didn't play down to the level of the competition.

Instead, the Corsairs put together an 87-70 victory against a Pasadena City College team that is one of the worst in their divisions.

The Corsairs opened a 12-point lead at one point, scored a season-high and produced their biggest margin of victory for the season.

They had three players score in double figures. Two of them went perfect from the field.

The frontcourt of the Corsairs, forwards David Nwaba and J'Ryon Moss were dominant forces.

Nwaba had 19 points on a terrific five-for-five shooting and four blocks, Moss had 16 points on superb six-for-six shooting and seven rebounds.

Keilan Horton played a respectable game, scoring 16 points on five-for-10 shooting, and six-for eight on free throws. Horton started the game slow, missing his first three shots, turning the ball over, and making metal errors. It was a different story after halftime.

"I played aggressive, I still was in attack mode through the whole game," he said.

The whole team picked up their play in the after holding a six-point lead going into the half.

"We were very aggressive, we played hard defense," Horton said "Our defense became our offense."

And it showed, forcing the Lancers into a multitude of second half turnovers, turning them into easy transition baskets.

Nwaba wore a protective mask over his face due to a concussion he suffered earlier in the season; it didn't slow him down from having a career night.

"It just affects my vision when I dribble," Nwaba said.

The Corsairs took a 37-31 half-time lead, but head coach Jerome Jenkins wasn't satisfied with that.

"He actually left it up to us, he didn't really have words," Moss said "He let us get it together."

The Corsairs will host their tournament this weekend, where they will face Rio Hondo on Friday at 7 pm and Grossmont on Saturday at 1 pm.
