Women's soccer defeats LA Valley College

The Santa Monica College Corsairs opened Western State Conference play Tuesday with a 1-0 win against LA Valley in the Conference home opener The Corsairs came out strong from the start creating chances on goal throughout the entire match. 

 
In the 31st minute Filippa Struxsjo finished a free kick from Amaya Nunez for the game winning goal. The game continued to be a hard fought match on both sides of the ball until the final whistle. 
 
SMC dominated possession and shots with 21 total shots and 15 on goal compared to LAVC's 11 shots with only 1 on goal. Antoinette Saldana led the Corsairs in the shots category with 7 shots all on frame. Yosemite Cruz completed her 7th shut out of the year. 
 
The Corsairs, winners of their last four matches have a bye week this week and will return to action Tuesday October 16 at LA Pierce College at 4pm. SMC moved up 2 spots in the United Soccer Association Junior College Division III Poll to #14 in the nation.
