SBCC got its first two points in intercollegiate women's beach volleyball on Friday and gave an outstanding effort before falling 3-2 at Santa Monica. In their second match of the morning, the Vaqueros lost to Palomar, 5-0.
McKenzie Garrison and Grace Trocki, two star players from the Vaqueros' indoor team, swept Brianna Montgomery/Angelina Burton 21-13, 21-14 to record the first point in program history.
Jacque Ortegon/Emma Esparza rallied to take a thrilling No. 2 match in three sets, 13-21, 24-22, 15-10.
The No. 3 and 4 matches were also close with the Vaqueros falling a few points short. Lily Eaves/Annie Rodgers won the first set at No. 3, then lost the next two (18-21, 21-16, 15-8). Michelle Orgel/Madie Meyer came up a few points short in the No. 4 doubles, 21-19, 21-18.
The Vaqueros didn't have enough players to field a No. 5 team.
Ortegon/Esparza played the closest match against Palomar. The Comets' No. 2 team prevailed 21-19, 16-21, 15-12.
The Vaqueros will open Western State Conference play on Friday at Santa Monica when they take on Victor Valley at 11 a.m. and Glendale at 1 p.m.
