Spending the weekend at the Fullerton Tournament, the Cerritos College women's basketball team split their two games, as they dropped a 73-57 decision to Porterville College and followed that their a 63-29 win over Santa Monica College. The Falcons (7-8) will get some time off before they return to the court on December 30 to host Cypress College in a 5:00 p.m. non-conference game.
Cerritos vs. Porterville: In their first meeting against the Pirates since the 2014-15 season, the teams were tied, 23-23 in the second quarter until a 5-0 run allowed Porterville to open a lead. The Falcons kept the game close at 33-30 in the third quarter after a Bridgette McIntyre (St. Anthony HS) free throw. But, once again, Porterville went on a little run and opened a 49-43 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. A pair of early three-pointers gave the Pirates a 10-point lead (57-47) and Cerritos spent the remainder of the quarter trying to get back into the game. They experienced a 3:40 drought and saw their deficit swell to 14 points, which would turn out to be too much to overcome. Freshman center Akayla Burton (El Segundo HS) led the team with 20 points (9-of-12 FG) and 12 rebounds, with McIntyre accounting for nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Ashley Miller (Paramount HS) added seven points off the bench with sophomore Cynthia Almanzar (John Glenn HS) pulling down seven rebounds.
Cerritos vs. Santa Monica: Limiting the Corsairs to just 29 points in their second game of the Fullerton Tournament, the Falcons were able to split their two games after a 63-29 victory. Cerritos opened the game by getting out to a 13-2 lead and never looked back. Last-minute baskets from freshman Damarie Saldivar (Paramount HS) and Miller made it a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, while they accounted for the first six points in the second quarter on baskets from Valerie Romero (California HS), Denise Cortez (Norwalk HS) and Saldivar and held a 23-5 advantage. The lead continued to swell and was 21 (35-14) at halftime. Cerritos converted 34 Santa Monica turnovers into 35 points and accounted for 44 of their points in the paint. Burton connected on 7-of-9 field goals for 14 points and added 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Saldivar concluded with 13 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists in a solid all-around performance, with the bench combining for 24 points and 15 rebounds. Miller turned in seven points, five rebounds and five steals.
