The Santa Monica College Women's Basketball team won its season opener with a 63-50 victory over Cuesta College. Cuesta entered the game with a 0-1 record after falling to Santa Ana College Thursday November 3.
The Corsairs started out cold in the first quarter falling behind the Cougars 10-16. The two teams were tied 26-26 as the Corsairs fought their way back into the game.
SMC outscored Cuesta in the third quarter 22-15 and led by 7 points after the third.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Corsairs as they pulled ahead late for the win.
Santa Monica was led by Freshman Guard Maya Stokes (32 points, 7 steals and 6 rebounds) and Freshman forward Aryn Press (15 points 11 rebounds). The Corsairs also received stellar play from point guard JaiYahne Henderson who had 6 points and 8 assists.
The Corsairs will head to the Pasadena City College tournament next week to take on the Pasadena Lancers in first round action. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
