Corsairs Top 15th Ranked Southwestern in Opening Night Win

Santa Monica College playing in the 2018 - 2019 season opener, defeated 15th ranked Southwestern College 77-67 at Miramar College in Don Gehler Memorial Tourney. The Corsairs jumped out to a hot defensive start by causing six early turnovers that led to a 12-2 advantage. A bit later in the first half, the Corsairs led 17-6 after a corner 3-pointer by freshman power forward Daniel Hayes. Santa Monica led at halftime 33-30 with shooting guard Daisone Hughes leading the team with nine points, and Hayes contributing six points and 4 rebounds.

In the second half, the Corsairs took control of the game and led by as many as 14 points. Sophmore power forward Lucas Zemen led the charge in the second half with 11 points and eight rebounds and freshman point guard Daniel Zahabian added 11 points and made 9-11 free throws in the second half.

Zemen tallied 14 points and nine rebounds, Hughes finished with 14 points and two rebounds, Zahabian had 11 points, and sophomore center Kyle Young added eight points, six rebounds, and four blocks.

The Corsairs (1-0) and ranked #12 in the state will face Imperial Valley College (1-0) today at 6 p.m. at Miramar College.
