In the second game of the season, at Miramar College, Santa Monica College (2-0) defeated Imperial Valley College 85-65. The Corsairs got great contributions from their talented group of freshmen led by Daisone Hughes, Daniel Zahabian, and Eli Degrate. Hughes had a game-high 24 points, hit four three-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds. Hughes is averaging a team-leading 19 points per game.
Degrate energized the team in the second half with his high intensity and active defense. Degrate finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals in 21 minutes of action. Zahabian tallied 12 points, made 7-11 free throws, and grabbed three rebounds.
"The group intensified their play in the second half," said Head Coach Joshua Thomas. "Eli's energy was infectious and Hughes shot the basketball with confidence. Additionally, sophomore power forward Jordan Wilson played excellent in the second half with his all around play. Wilson's six points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the second half was the x-factor performance that was a game changer for us."
The 12th ranked Corsairs face Miramar College (2-0) in the championship game tonight at 6 p.m. at the Don Gehler Memorial Tourney.
