SMC Women's Basketball wins season opener

On Saturday night (November 8) , the Santa Monica College Corsair women's basketball team opened the season by playing tighter defense than a compact parking spot between two Jeeps on the Airport Campus.  Behind the impressive defensive performance, the Lady Corsairs began the 2014-2015 season by defeating Los Angeles Trade Technical College, 67-45.

On every inbound for Trade Tech, SMC had two defenders overtake the opposing point guard Ashley Hernandez, from whom they stole the ball five consecutive times. The Corsairs played such successful defense, that it was hard to tell if their hands were actually that active, or if Trade Tech actually had fun in turning the ball over more than 20 times.

In their shinning purple and gold, Trade Tech couldn't help but mirror the lousy athleticism of their neighbors down Figueroa street.  SMC's offense was primarily lead by sophomore shooting guards Kierra Jackson and Briah Nelson who finished the game with 10 and 12 points respectively. SMC rarely had to bother running to the opposite side of the court, with enough offensive rebounds to score 15 points on 25 second opportunites alone.

Spirits were high and a single seat was hard to find in the bleachers.  On offense, SMC over-powered them 7-0 within the first two minutes of the game, and Trade Tech never saw a single lead.

By the end of the first half, the Corsairs already established an 8 point lead to finish off Trade Tech.

The women played their very first game of the season as if it was their last chance to play basketball ever again.

The Lady Corsairs will continue their season this Thursday as they travel to face the Santa Ana College Dons
