The Santa Monica College Women's Soccer took their undefeated record to Santa Barbara College where they lost 2-1 to the Vaqueros. SBCC finished runner-up in state in 2017 and was the toughest competition SMC has faced thus far this season.
The Corsairs entered the nonconference game with some gaudy numbers – a 4-0 record, ranked No. 9 in the state and a 21-1 goal differential. The 19th-ranked Vaqueros (2-1-1) have won 12 straight home games and 21 of their last 22.
Santa Monica had four shots in the first half, when they trailed 2-0, and 13 in the second half.
The Corsairs cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 68th minute. Antoinette Saldana lofted a 35-yard free kick and the Santa Barbara City goalkeeper (Holly Telliard) punched it out about five feet. The ball then caromed off a Vaquero defender and over the line. SMC's Maryam Pierce was credited with the goal since she was the closest Corsair to the ball.
The Corsairs outshot the Vaqueros 17-14 with 11 shots on-goal. Ceirra Little hit the crossbar in the 49th minute and a shot by Saldana bounced off the right post in the 82nd minute.
