SANTA MONICA WOMEN'S TENNIS FINISHES UNDEFEATED WITH 6-3 WIN OVER VISITING MT. SAC

The Santa Monica College Women's Tennis team completed a perfect 6-0 season with a season ending win over visiting Mt. San Antonio College (6-3).  Savaughna Mayo and Nicole West won the team's first double point 8-0.  Kiara Gulati and Maya Brandis followed suit, posting an 8-3 win at #2 doubles.  Yasna Yaghoubi and Shayesteh Moeini came close to completing a sweep of all three doubles points but came up short, losing 9-7.

Nicole West scored the Corsairs first single point to put SMC ahead 3-1 with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at #1 singles.  Team Captain Savaughna Mayo finished next at #2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 to complete a day in which she did not lose a game in either doubles or singles.  West and Mayo finished the season with undefeated records in both singles and doubles.

With the team score at 4-2 the Corsairs needed one more point to secure the win.  The visiting Mounties were leading in two of the three remaining matches.

Maya Brandis faced a tough competitor in Cassandra Paulson but dug deep and scored the team clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 win.   After the match was decided, Kiara Gulati came from a set down to prevail at #3 singles winning the second set and a match tiebreak for the final and sixth SMC point of the day.  Giselle Armijo was the last Corsair playing but was defeated by Rebecca Contreras in a match tiebreak at #6 singles.

"I am so proud of these women" stated SMC Head Coach Richard Goldenson.  "They worked hard all season and conducted themselves with poise and grace on the court.  Their commitment to following Covid safety protocols was amazing.  I believe this experience will be a transformative experience for each of these student-athletes and the future looks bright for these strong women.  I would also like to give a shout out to the entire SMC community as this season has truly been a team effort and our ability to even step foot on the court would not have happened without the tremendous support from President Jeffery, administrators and staff."

The Corsairs finished the 2021 Covid-shortened season with an undefeated record of 6-0.  This was only the second time in school history that the Corsairs finished a season undefeated.  In 2011, the Corsairs went 17-0 and captured the triple crown of California Community College tennis winning the state team, singles, doubles titles.
